What is Pasture-Raised?
Our chickens start their lives inside our climate controlled brooder house. Here we are able to maintain the proper temperature and environment to give them a healthy start.
After 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the weather and the temperature outside, we move our chickens to their portable pens out on the pasture. These pens provide protection from predators such as foxes and hawks while at the same time allowing our birds to forage. While we still provide grain as a feed, our chickens are able to get a portion of their diet from insects and plants.
We move the pens 2 to 3 times a day to distribute the chicken droppings as fertilizer and to make sure the chickens have plenty of access to fresh pasture.
Why Pasture-Raised?
So why go through all this trouble to raise up some chicken? Well, because is tastes a whole lot better than any chicken raised without pasture. By supplimenting their feed with pasture and insects we are adding a diversity to our chickens' diet, this in turn leads to a healthier, tastier bird.
